The first big award show the award season, the Golden Globes hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has come and gone as the ceremony aired on NBC on January 5. Like every year, there will be a ton of winners few people will enjoy and get upset over. That’s not the case with the 77th annual Golden Globes because they filled the night with a lot of upsets that I can’t get mad over, to be honest.
First, let’s start with comedian Ricky Gervais hosting the gig for the fifth time, and it’s clear that he doesn’t care one bit about being there when this is his last time. I don’t think he’s funny. But almost all of his jokes will not be well-received the morning after, and not even the jab at Cats didn’t make me laugh. The one thing that got out of it was Tom Hanks’ expression, which was probably how most of the people felt while watching Gervais try to be hilarious, but failed.
The World War I drama 1917 took home two awards, including Best Picture- Drama and Best Director for Sam Mendes. This was a total surprise because even though it’s getting a wide release this weekend, everybody thought The Irishman or even Joker would claim the prize. And for Best Director, beating out heavyweights like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Bong Joon-ho seems crazy to think about. But I’m happy it’s getting attention, even though I’m one of the few people who still haven’t seen it yet. On the side of Musical or Comedy, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home the most awards with it winning Best Picture-Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay for Tarantino, and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt.
In the acting categories, Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger won Best Actor and Best Actress-Drama for Joker and Judy, respectively, while Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story. The Musical or Comedy categories saw Taron Egerton and Awkwafina earn their respective wins for Best Actor and Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Rocketman and The Farewell. Hopefully, this win for Egerton is enough to get him an Oscar nomination.
There was only one surprise that I didn’t see coming. Who would’ve thought Missing Link was going to take Best Animated Feature over Toy Story 4 or Frozen 2? Not me. I thought it wasn’t bad, but that was almost like a dark horse pick.
Going into the television side, Fleabag won Best Series- Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Comedy for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. HBO’s Succession scored Best Series- Drama and Best Actor in a Drama for Brian Cox. Chernobyl took home Best Limited Series and Best Supporting Actor for Stellan Skarsgård.
Ellen DeGeneres accepted the Carol Burnett Award and gave a touching and funny speech in which she thanked her “husband” Mark. Besides that, they honored Tom Hanks with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and there’s no better actor to earn this prestigious honor for what he has given to Hollywood for decades. Probably the best speech of the night went to Michelle Williams for when she won Best Actress in a Limited Series for Fosse/Verdon and encourages women to vote and let them know that what they do with their bodies is their choice. Great message, especially when she’s expecting a child with director Thomas Kail.
Though my predictions were bad this year, this wasn’t a too bad year for the Golden Globes. I’m also not mad at the categories I lost because some of them are excellent winners. At least, everybody won’t be complaining about it, unlike last year when they were taken seriously. But we’re right around the corner to the Oscar nominations and the Critics’ Choice Awards this upcoming Sunday.
