Many of us get excited about what’s to come every year when we get psyched about sitting in the theater and hoping it’s gonna end up great. A lot of the movies that are coming out this year are the bigger ones that everybody knows about like the superhero movies and the big blockbusters. That’s mainly because there are gonna be movies that I haven’t heard of yet, or maybe it’s something that I not looking forward to like everybody else. Will any of these be my favorites, or will the smaller movies like Sundance take over? This list is what I’m really looking forward to checking out in 2019.
10) ‘It: Chapter 2’ (9/6)
2017’s It was pretty great, and it’s truly one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever released. As soon as it was over, I try to imagine what the sequel would look like. When you have James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Hader playing the grown-up versions of the kids’ from the Losers Club with Pennywise torturing them years later, it’s enough to make me excited about It: Chapter 2. Fingers crossed that this will have even more frightening scares and not have a bad ending like the television movie.
9) ‘Shazam!’ (4/5)
Most of the DC Comics movies hasn’t been impressive thus far, but I’m loving the look from Shazam! so far. The trailer for Shazam! was my favorite that came out of Comic-Con, and it really appears to look like a superhero version of Big, which isn’t a bad thing. I haven’t read the comics, but I am aware of what Billy Batson can truly do with his new superpowers.
8) ‘The Irishman’ (TBD on Netflix)
Here’s why I’m excited about The Irishman: 1) Martin Scorsese is directing it. 2) It stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and the return of Joe Pesci. And 3) it’s a gangster flick. What more can you ask for? This long-awaited Netflix crime drama, with a huge production budget, is finally coming out this year, and I’m curious how they will use to de-aging effects on the actors. Plus, after being underwhelmed by Silence, I have faith The Irishman will be special.
7) ‘Captain Marvel’ (3/8)
Seems like Captain Marvel is the one MCU movie that nobody is anticipating. That’s kind of annoying. The trailers aren’t the greatest, but they are still intriguing. We finally get to see the first female-led MCU movie that takes place in the ’90s where we get to see the origin story of Carol Danvers and how she became this powerful hero. People judging Brie Larson before the movie comes out are pure hypocrites.
6) ‘Toy Story 4’ (6/21)
If you to ask me about a fourth installment in the Toy Story franchise four years ago, it would sound crazy since Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending. But Pixar’s history with sequels has more hits than misses lately. If Toy Story 4 brings the emotions, great new characters, and the thoughtfulness that came with the previous movies, we should be happy.
5) ‘Us’ (3/22)
Jordan Peele’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning horror/thriller Get Out is finally coming out with Us. At first glimpse at the trailer, we seem to be experiencing a family being terrorized by doppelgängers? It sounds weird, but it’s Peele behind the camera. Many of us will leave the theater totally shocked or thinking and asking questions as we walk out. Don’t want to know anything else about this because it just looks too intriguing.
4) ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ (7/26)
Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film is one that’s been talked about for a while, and it’s finally coming out this summer. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood features a huge ensemble, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate with the story revolving around the Manson Family Murders. The timing of the release might be controversial since it’s around the 50th anniversary of the murders. But it’s Tarantino; he knows how to re-write history in a great way. The only thing I hate about this so far is Lena Dunham being in the cast.
3) ‘The Lion King’ (7/19)
Here is the only live-action Disney remake that I’m looking forward to this year (don’t care about Dumbo or Aladdin), and yes, I’m calling it live-action. The Lion King is my favorite Disney movie of all-time, and hearing that the studio was gonna be handling this made me pumped up. It’s too early to tell if this is the best idea for Disney, but this already has a stacked voice cast (Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Beyoncé, James Earl Jones), great visual effects just from the teaser, and Jon Favreau helming it, who did a fantastic job with his version of The Jungle Book back in 2016.
2) ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ (12/20)
I am a Star Wars fan, so it isn’t a surprise that I’m excited about Episode IX. But with J.J. Abrams coming back to finish this new trilogy enough to make me happy, the reason that it isn’t at the top spot is that the fan community have been annoying the past year. Ever since the reactions to The Last Jedi (Loved It) and Solo (Mixed Feelings) have been mixed with fans, almost a lot of the Star Wars fans have made the community toxic and bummed me out. Will this bring everybody together in happiness again? We shall see this upcoming December.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ (4/26)
Another year, another Avengers movie is my most anticipated movie of the year. Many of us wonder how Avengers: Endgame will conclude this adventurous journey with our remanding heroes fighting against Thanos. The ending to Infinity War is still one of the most talked about moments out of any movie last year. Tons of speculation about how Endgame will unfold and what’s going to happen to our favorite superheroes by the time it’s all over.
