‘Bombshell’ (12/20)
First up, Lionsgate released the full-length trailer for upcoming drama Bombshell, which stars a pretty cool ensemble that includes Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, and John Lithgow. Directed by Jay Roach and written by Charles Randolph, this tells the real-life story of how Roger Ailes was taken down at Fox News for his sexual allegations by the women who worked for him.
The first teaser was fine, but it shows that Theron looks so much like Megyn Kelly. This new trailer is better as it gives us a deep look into how this came to be. Plus, it was recently screened for several critics, and I’ve been hearing it’s great, quite possibly a big Oscar contender. I can’t tell if this will be another Big Short since the trailer was kind of cut the same way now with Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” (mixed feelings about that), but now I can say it’s worth checking out to see if it’s worth the hype.
Score: 7/10
‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’ (4/3/2020)
Now onto a trailer for a sequel I don’t care about, and that is for Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. This follow-up to the 2018 original sees Peter (voiced by James Cordon) leaving his home of the garden to find himself and where he belongs in a world where his bad behavior is tolerated.
I did not like the first Peter Rabbit. Though since it made a killing at the box office, Sony was dumb enough to greenlight a sequel for kids to enjoy. Yet, this was very stupid. This just gives us the same unfunny antics that one would expect set to Vampire Weekend’s “This Life” and Cage the Elephant’s “Trouble”? Don’t persuade me with good music! But I have to give it to Domhnall Gleeson for getting me to chuckle a couple of times. I don’t care about Peter Rabbit 2, and call me bitter when I say it doesn’t look fun.
Score: 3/10
‘Marriage Story’ (12/6 on Netflix)
Next up, Netflix released the new full-length trailer for Noah Baumbach’s latest drama Marriage Story, which stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. They play a couple, one a theater director and one an actress, that is about to get divorced, and it’s tough on them when their young son is involved.
Can I see this now, please? Because I’ve heard outstanding things about Marriage Story, especially the performances of Driver and Johansson. You can just feel that there’s going to be some emotional tension throughout, and it’s either going to be uncomfortable, heartbreaking or both. It’s getting that Oscar love quickly, and this is going to be my main priority of the day when it comes out on Netflix (last day of classes for me).
Score: 8.5/10
‘Lady and the Tramp’ (11/12 on Disney+)
And finally, Disney+ released the second trailer for the latest live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp, one of the first movies to be streaming on the streaming service. The story follows a Cocker Spaniel named Lady (voiced by Tessa Thompson) and a Schnauzer mix named Tramp (voiced by Justin Theroux) as they go on a journey and fall in love.
My reaction to this new trailer is about the same: looks cute enough, but not fully buying the talking dogs, which is clearly both CGI and real dogs. This won’t be the first movie I’m immediately going to watch when I get Disney +, but I’m still worth checking out.
