Since I never had the chance given my take on music on here outside of my Matter of Opinion take on Imagine Dragons, here’s my chance to talk about a few of my favorite songs that have come out in 2019 so far. Just know that these are Alternative and Rock songs, since those are the genres that I listen to the most.
1) “Alligator”, Of Monsters and Men
The Icelandic folk/pop band, Of Monsters and Men, has made a return, and their first single off of their upcoming third studio album, Fever Dreams, is addicting just from the first listen. “Alligator” is undoubtedly catchy that feels energetic every time I listen to it or comes on the radio. I listened to some of Of Monsters and Men’s other well-known songs before this, but I can’t believe not a lot know about them.
🎶Wake me up, I’m fever dreaming
And now I lose control, I’m fever dreaming🎶
2) “Timebomb”, Walk the Moon
Walk the Moon is known for “Shut Up and Dance” and “One Foot”, but “Timebomb”, which was released earlier this year, an earworm that couldn’t be controlled. The moment I heard the entire song for the first time, I think I listened to it about five times that day. And almost every day because it was stuck in my head. It’s the kind of song that will make you dance the night away with its catchy and fun sound that’s suited well for the group.
🎶Is it real love? Is it real love?
Ti-ti-ti-ticking like a time-bomb
I can feel your, I can feel your heart
Ti-ti-ti-ticking like a time-bomb🎶
3) “It Doesn’t Matter Why”, Silversun Pickups
Knowing that Silversun Pickups was releasing a new album after a short hiatus is enough to know that “It Doesn’t Matter Why”. The first single off their recently released fifth album Widow’s Weeds brings back why fans of the alternative bands have loved them since they started. “It Doesn’t Matter Why”‘s melancholic lyrics about moving forward this each of our lives is equally matched with its killer tempo.
🎶You wanna read our minds, we know
Is it better on the other side? No
Will it help you sleep at night? It won’t
And it doesn’t matter why we’re known
We’re just known🎶
4) “Rebel Girl”, Angels and Airwaves
Angels and Airwaves was one of those bands that I never heard of until last year, and I loved them ever since. Though it’s been a long time they released anything, they made a comeback with “Rebel Girl”. They came back with a song that remains the band’s new wave and alternative sound that their music’s been known for over a decade. The bridge is mainly the reason why “Rebel Girl” rocks. And I still enjoy listening to blink-182, though “Blame It On My Youth” is pretty basic after listening to it multiple times.
🎶Do-do-do you want to go back to where we started
Back before we were broken hearted🎶
5) “For Real”, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
It was a sad day when Tom Petty passed away two years ago. “For Real” was a previously unreleased track that was included in the Best of Everything album. Feeling a real tribute to the late singer, it’s the lyrics that truly got me about how it was never about becoming famous, but doing something that you love and feeling that for every minute. “For Real” is an emotional song that doesn’t let everyone forget what a true legend Petty was.
This might be a stretch by saying this, but this reminds me a bit of Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt”.
🎶I did it for real
And I did it for you🎶
