The feeling that Netflix is probably going to be streaming a new rom-com almost every month will evoke good feelings for those who, just like in the latest Always Be My Maybe (insert singing the title in the same fashion of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby”). Trying my best to catch up with them as much as I can, safe to say it managed to be a good gem.

What’s the Story: Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park) have been childhood best friends and do everything together before they had a falling out 16 years ago. Fast-forward to the present where Sasha has now become a celebrity chef opening her restaurant in San Francisco and Marcus still living his widowed dad. They both run into each other and ultimately catch up when one of them might be falling for the other.

Fresh Off The Boat (underrated show) creator Nahnatchka Khan makes her film debut with a screenplay penned by Wong, Park, and Michael Golamco (Grimm) that’s all about those friendships that drift apart because of certain circumstances and getting back in the roots and becoming discovering something true within ourselves. When it comes down to relationships, Khan’s direction takes charge when it has to also deal with careers paths and transitions when growing up.

The reason I wanted to check this out was because of the pairing of Ali Wong and Randall Park. Both of them have shown to be hilarious in their own work and they share great onscreen chemistry that came off as perfectly believable as friends and potential lovers. It was great to see both of them in the main roles rather than a supporting character. Both are at the time of career choices that leaves one of them not wanting to push forward. Since they co-wrote the script, they worked together so well. Plus, who knew Park can rap and be excellent at it?

Though it can become difficult to be falling for a close friend, you never know how one would react is felt in here when it becomes apparent. We’ve all been through that, and Always Be My Maybe doesn’t waste the opportunity to discuss it. Just know that you need the say what you need to say at the right moment and hope for the best.

There’s one thing everybody will be talking about when they watch this, and that is the legendary Keanu Reeves as, you guessed it, Keanu Reeves. When he showed in the last trailer, I had no idea he was in it, and I need to know how they got him to be in a rom-com, since he just stole the movie from everybody when he shows up. Without giving any details, his introduction is just hilarious.

Also, the rest of the supporting cast like James Saito as Marcus’s dad Harry and comedian Michelle Buteau as Veronica, Sasha’s friend and assistant, added some general laughs along the way.

Always Be My Maybe‘s flaw does come down to the fact it’s pretty predictable and formulaic. If you have seen a story like this play out with familiar beats, you probably won’t have a problem. Once you see it trying to be just that, you’re able to still enjoy it due to the sweet nature of it all unfolding.

If you’re looking another fresh take on the rom-com to seek on Netflix, Always Be My Maybe is there to be another hit. Handled well with it lead performances and a relatable story with an ending that I honestly found touching, you can’t go wrong with this.
